Alex Verhaest Belgium, b. 1985

Alex Verhaest (b. 1985, Brussels), is a contemporary multimedia artist primarily working in the medium of video. Verhaest’s largest body of work, which explores the narrative possibilities of art using state of the art technology, focuses on the nature of language and its limitations as well as the social conventions surrounding it. Verhaest’s work, based around the analysis of language and narratives, explores the potential of ways to communicate contemporary narratives and contemplates artistically the coexistent relationship of humans and machines formed through the combination of technology. Narratives newly analyzed or depicted by Verhaest are presented as interactive images that float in the boundaries between photography, painting, and film. Her work, which recalls the composition and visual effects of classical painting, presupposes serious considerations on the way art has dealt with death, along with the fundamental mechanisms of film. 

Alex Verhaest currently works between Brussels, Belgium and Amsterdam, the Netherlands and studied photography at the St. Lucas School of Arts, Antwerp. Verhaest has exhibited at such major institutions as Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2016) and ZKM Karlsruhe (2015) and is the recipient of awards including those from the Electronic Language International Festival in São Paulo, Brazil, the Ghent New Technological Art Award, the New Face award at Japan Media Arts Festival, and the Golden Nica from Ars Electronica.
