핀통은 라오스 나피아 마을과의 협업을 지속하며 〈운명의 기관〉 연작 프로젝트를 2022년부터 진행하였다. 〈운명의 기관〉은 불발탄을 녹여 환상통 치료에 쓰이는 거울처럼 만든 한 쌍의 판으로 구성된 작품이다. 작가는 환상통을 앓은 끝에 세계 구석구석의 소득 수준이 낮은 지역에 거울과 거울 치료법을 보급한 캐나다인 활동가 스티븐 섬너로부터 영감을 얻었다.
이번 전시를 위해 바라캇 컨템포러리의 커미션으로 제작된 〈운명의 기관(집합)〉은 〈운명의 기관〉 프로젝트의 연장으로서, 〈운명의 기관〉 작품 다섯 쌍을 B-21 레이더 폭격기 모양으로 배치한 형태와 암수 두루미가 서로 소통하기 위해 취하는 자세 다섯 가지를 형상화해 배치한 형태 두 버전이 격주로 번갈아 전시된다. B-21 레이더는 노스롭 그루먼이 개발하여 미 공군에서 운용하는 스텔스 폭격기로, 2023년 11월에 초도 시험 비행을 개시했다. 대공 레이더에는 거의 탐지되지 않으며, 탐지되더라도 작은 새로 인식된다고 한다. 핀통은 이를 한반도의 DMZ에 서식하는 멸종위기종 철새 두루미와의 역설적인 대비 관계에 둔다. 냉전 시대의 질곡이 남긴 상처는 DMZ를 고립 상태로 만들었지만 그로 인해 DMZ는 수많은 멸종위기 동식물의 보금자리가 되었다. 천장에 매달려 두루미의 자세를 고정하는 전깃줄은 DMZ 내 두루미의 부상·사망 요인 중 큰 비율을 차지하는 송전선 사고를 상징한다.
