We are delighted to share that Wael Shawky and Basel Abbas & Ruanne Abou-Rahme have been selected for the ArtReview Power 100 (2025).
Wael Shawky continues to reshape how history can be retold through art — from Drama 1882 for the Egyptian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale to the expansive I Am Hymns of the New Temples at LUMA Arles. Whether drawing connections between Ancient Greek and Egyptian myth or staging colonial history through puppetry and musical theatre, Shawky treats history as an artistic creation, a field of translation and reinterpretation. This year included major presentations in the Daegu Art Museum, Barakat Contemporary, and the MMCA Gwacheon.
Basel Abbas & Ruanne Abou-Rahme weave together field recordings, oral histories, archival material, and urgent political realities from Palestine into powerful, multi-layered video installations. Works such as Enemy of the Sun (Aichi Triennale 2025) and Prisoners of Love (Nottingham Contemporary 2025) bear witness to displacement, land, resistance, and the fragmented testimonies of contemporary Palestinian life.
We warmly congratulate all the artists for their continued contributions to shaping the landscape of contemporary art today.
