Barakat Contemporary will showcase Sojung Jun's work, Syncope (2023), in the Focus Asia section of Frieze Seoul 2024 (F01), taking place at COEX Convention & Exhibition center from September 4th to 7th.
Syncope follows the trajectory of sound: the rattling of a train, the travelling words written outside of one’s mother tongue, and the plosive sounds of musical instruments beyond the score. In this work, Sojung Jun superimposes the modern speed of trains which were crossing Asia and Europe in the past, the physical speed of bodies crossing borders, the speed of voices mumbling out of one’s mother tongue, the speed of data, and the ecological speed of migrating plants. She then considers the world of acceleration that runs through the past, present, and future—and the practices of the beings that rupture it—through the movement of sound. As she explores the artistic practices of those aforementioned people, the artist pays close attention to the nomadic identities of transformation and metamorphosis, while also imagining new ways of thinking that recognize regional and technological diversity, the writing of histories that do not omit differences, and platforms for real or imagined subjecthood that do not fit into existing classifications or institutional models.
