Sojung Jun & Michael Rakowitz participates in inaugural exhibition of New Taipei City Museum

Sojung Jun and Michael Rakowitz will participate in Reimagining Radical Cities, the inaugural exhibition of the New Taipei City Art Museum from April 25 to September 7.

Sojung Jun presents Despair to Be Reborn (2020), inspired by a poem by Yi Sang. Jun reinterprets the poem within the context of the Mitsukoshi Department Store, built during the Japanese colonial era, offering a multi-perspective exploration of Seoul's ambivalent reality shaped by modernization. Through a non-linear montage, Jun intricately intertwines footage filmed in Seoul, Tokyo, and France with archival materials. Employing de-perspectival camera angles and the dynamic movements of parkour performers, the work compresses time and space, constructing an imagined escape route.

Michael Rakowitz’s The Waiting Gardens of the North (2023), commissioned by the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, is a living installation created in collaboration with displaced or immigrant communities in Gateshead and Newcastle, UK. As a communal garden space, it reflects overlapping histories of migration, conflict, trauma, and resilience shared by people, plants, and cultural memory.
