Michael Rakowitz’s new public art project Be longing opens on 5 July 2025 at Molenvlietpark in The Hague. Commissioned by Stroom Den Haag in partnership with the Municipality of The Hague, the large-scale installation connects the city’s archaeological layers with its histories of migration.

At its core, the work creates a space where ancient ceramic shards from the city’s soil resonate with the vessels and stories brought by migrant communities today. Through close collaboration with local residents, Rakowitz explores identity, belonging, and longing using objects and memories as conduits.

Through shared meals and conversation, it becomes a space where lived experiences and collective memory converge. By engaging with The Hague’s cultural and social strata, Rakowitz invites us to ask, “Where do we belong? Where do we come from?”
