Sojung Jun’s I Do Nine-Tailed Fox was presented on Sunday, November 16th, 7:30 pm (EST) at the Asia Society, with a film screening and a live opera performance as part of The Performa Biennial 2025.
Performed by nine musicians spanning pansori, theremin, gayageum, and more, I Do Nine-Tailed Fox weaves ancestral music with experimental composition in a nonlinear, nine-part opera.
Drawing on the East Asian legend of the Gumiho (구미호, nine-tailed fox) and the story of the Koryo-saram (ethnic Koreans exiled under Stalin), Jun explored survival, transformation, and collective memory through sound and image. A newly commissioned film uses AI to animate the forgotten histories of women artists at the Koryo Theater.
