Gary Hume United Kingdom, b. 1962

Overview

Gary Hume (b. 1962, Kent), is an original member of the Young British Artists (YBAs) and contemporary artist well known for his paintings that depict everyday objects in an abstract and sensual manner on aluminum panels. Gary Hume observes objectively with a distance from the subject before then recording the modeled form as a painting. Based on this, the object is cut or enlarged, simplified, and reborn in an entirely new plastic language. This comes down to the artist’s stance that it be crucial that the work is independent—separated from the original object and the artist’s emotions and thoughts. Gary Hume’s work is about surface as captured by an objective gaze, and another sort of depth created by that surface.

Gary Hume currently divides his time between London and Accord, New York.  He studied at Goldsmith’s College, University of London, and participated in the Freeze exhibition planned mainly by students from the college in 1988. He was invited to both the São Paulo Art Biennial in 1996 and the Venice Biennale in 1999 as an artist represented in the British pavilion, and has held numerous solo and group exhibitions at major art institutions including the Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Whitechapel Gallery, ICA, Hayward Gallery, Royal Academy, National Portrait Gallery, and MoMA.
